Overview: The n’kaf homeworld of Sybal is by far and away the most bizarre sentient-hosting planet in the entire Cynos Union. Orbiting relatively closely to its primary, the red dwarf known as Fee’Kine, Sybal is classified as what was called an ‘Eyeball Earth’ by human astronomers in the early 21st Century (Earth time). At such a close orbit, and since it is tidally-locked to its star, Sybal takes precisely the same amount of time to complete one orbit as it does to complete one rotation. As such, Sybal’s year is exactly one day long, although that day lasts for 2415 hours (Earth time). With one side of the planet permanently facing the star, there is no day/night cycle on this strange world.

Ironically, given the animosity between the n’kaf and yowason, both of their homeworlds came about through similar processes. Both are classed as ‘Chthonian analog’ planets, which began life as gas giants before unknown processes stripped away most of their bulk, leaving the core of the gas giant as a rocky world, with a substantially thinner, albeit still life-sustaining, atmosphere.

Life on Sybal first evolved in, and is still largely confined to, what is known as the ‘sacred ring’, the terminator between the rocky desert of the inner hemisphere and the vast ice cap that covers Sybal’s dark side. The planet itself has a reputation for being a ‘deathworld’, and it is true that Sybal has the most hostile biosphere of any Cynos planet; many people joke that everything there is trying to kill everything else, and it is this which has given the n’kaf their unique psychology, one which praises the merits of extreme caution to the point of obsession, and keeping one’s head down, lest something big turns up and kills one messily.
